世界各民族語言表達顔色的詞語多寡不一，分類各異。英語和漢語對基本顔色詞的分類差別不大。漢語中有赤、橙、黃、綠、青、藍、紫，英語中有red（紅）， white（白），black（黑），green（綠），yellow（黃），blue（藍），purple（紫），gray（灰），brown（棕）。這些基本顔色之間有相同的方面，也有不同的區別。另外，受地理環境、民情風俗、思維方式、宗教信仰、民族心理等因素的影響，各種顔色對于不同民族的人而言，在視覺和心理上所引發的聯想和象征意義也不盡相同，翻譯時應該特別注意其中的差異。下面我們簡要列舉幾個主要顔色詞在英語和漢語中的對比。

　　　　此外，紅色對中國人和英美人而言，會産生不同的理解和聯想。在翻譯古典小說《紅樓夢》時，英國翻譯家David Hawkes認爲書中的"紅色"對漢語文化的人而言，表示喜慶、幸福、吉祥，但在英語國家的人眼中，綠色和金黃色具有類似的聯想意義，而紅色則意味著流血、危險或暴力。因此，他在翻譯時涉及紅色的詞語時作了一定的變通處理：

　　　　譯者在翻譯原文中的"紅樓夢"和"怡紅院"時沒有選用red一詞，而是分別譯爲Golden 和Green這兩個雖然不同色彩，但對譯語讀者來說具有相近意義的顔色詞。當然，這樣的處理方法是否合適，是否有利于原文文化在譯語中的再現，另當別論。不過，我們可以從中看出顔色詞的延伸涵義對語言和翻譯的影響。

　　　　綠色green在英語中可以表示"嫉妒、眼紅"，如：green with envy，green as jealousy，green-eyed monster都是指"十分嫉妒"的意思。漢語中表示"嫉妒"意義的"眼紅"，應該翻譯爲green-eyed而不能翻譯爲red-eyed。
